Friday, May 07, 2004 np: hank williams III - lovesick, broke and driftin' i'm very glad it's friday, for multiple reasons. it's been a week of slow upheaval, in bursts and fits and starts, like magma. things will settle this evening, as i believe a lot of mixed emotions can be quelled, as they often are, with good food and good company. i'm striving not to get too worked up today. i'm even toying with giving my american lit. class a break and just reading them a david sedaris short story, if i can find one clean enough. so, i'm not going to wax political about the following items. rather, i'll just point to them with maybe a finely honed comment or two to sum it up. first, the new york times says rumsfeld should go. i can't say i disagree in the least. (you will need to log in to read the editorial; if you are not registered with the NY times, it's worth it.) next, the FDA ruled not to sell plan b (the morning-after pill) over the counter. despite the FDA's advisory board recommending that it be made OTC (in two separate votes of 24-3 and 27-0), the ruling stated that the pill hasn't been proven to be safe for girls under the age of 16 to take. i'm not sure exactly why this is the case, but apparently, the article states, it has to do with the limited amount of data from those <16 because of limited use. the advisory board had recommended the OTC conversion and safety overwhelmingly, stating that "only politics" would preven it from being approved. well, say hi to politics. finally, a bit of levity. the triad has been utterly and completely blessed with something right under our noses since last fall, but have we reacted? alas, the answer is no. that something is fun. or, as the swedes call it, skoj. skoj is a swedish soft drink being test marketed here in the u.s. but only here in the triad area. that's odd. further, it is only at lowes foods stores. luckily, this is the store i frequent the most (given its location to my home and my high satisfaction with their store-brand items). after having skoj plummet to a bargain price of 25 cents a bottle, i decided to try some and my eyes were opened. amazing skoj, how sweet the taste, that saved a tongue like mine. skoj currently comes in two flavors: gooseberry and red berries. both are excellent, although because of the neon green coloring, i find myself leaning towards gooseberry. here are the benefits of this ambrosia: made of 15.5% real fruit juice, supplying 100% RDA of vitamin c, no caffeine, low sodium (40mg/per 20 oz. bottle, 2.5% RDA) and low calories compared to other sodas (225kC/per 20 oz. bottle as opposed to the average softdrink, coming in at 300+ kC/per 20 oz.). sadly, i think the reason for the rock bottom prices are that little interest has manifested itself and the lowes stores are slowly emptying their shelves. of course this is right after i discover how brilliantly good it is. so i stocked up last night while i was there. i can purchase 12 20oz. bottles for $3, where i noticed that, on sale, a comparable number of 20 oz. bottles of coke were $5. still not convinced? come over sometime and have a skoj on me. although i may get to where i hoard them like the sponge. i'll let you know if i get that desperate. posted by J.
