np: soft cylindrical silence.

today marks my tenth year in music.

ten years ago today, toad the wet sprocket's dulcinea was released. it was the first album i ever owned that mattered. as i've probably mentioned before, it would be the first album i ever owned, but kriss kross' totally krossed out gets that distinction. so, why does it matter?

it made me write poetry for the first time. it made me pick up a guitar and want to learn to play. it lead me to other artists, other music (nanci griffith, in particular). it made me begin to dissect things, to think about what something could mean below the surface.

eventually it would be indirectly responsible for: writing my own songs; joining one band (loman) and starting another (aslan); playing in coffee houses; becoming a college radio dj (going on 5 years this fall); becoming a music director at that station; sending me to my first concert (yeah, it was toad); endless other things too numerous and too nuanced to mention.

this all seems so silly, i'm sure, but there's something very spiritual about that record for me. not just in the music that's on it (although that is certainly a large part of it), but also in what it means to me.

so tonight i will go home and put it on. i will sink into the covers of my bed. i will let the warm and loving tones surround me. i will feel as if i'm 12 or 13 again. and i will re-discover what it was that got me where i am.

god bless our lovely old world.
