Friday, May 21, 2004 np: the streets - "blinded by the lights" my love for the new streets album is only growing. upon initial thought, this is probably my favorite album of 2004 thus far. we're half way through. and of course, come december, i'll be doing the j's indie/rock mayhem top 25 albums of the year. this one will be top 5 with almost no doubt. i was watching vh-1/blender's top 50 most awesomely bad songs last night. and while some of the choices were spot on ("we built this city" as number 1? you're damn right), i was repeatedly annoyed by host george lopez's reference to himself as "t.v.'s george lopez." i'm sorry. did i miss something? do you not exist outside of this box sitting in my living room? should i have my students call me "high school's mister neas?" i'm multi-colored today: black shoes, light and dark blue horizontal striped socks, light olive/beige pants, burnt orange sweater. i'm rather enjoying the stark faux pas of my dress. - .... . .. -. - . .-. -. . - .. ... ... ..- -.-. .... .- .-- . .- .-.. - .... --- ..-. -.- -. --- .-- .-.. . -.. --. . .- -. -.. .-. . ... --- ..- .-. -.-. . .-.-.- - .... .. ... .. ... .- .--. . .-. ..-. . -.-. - . -..- .- -- .--. .-.. . .-.-.- .. -.-. --- ..- .-.. -.. .----. ...- . -... . . -. .- .-- . ... - . .-. -. ..- -. .. --- -. --- .--. . .-. .- - --- .-. --..-- .. -.-. --- ..- .-.. -.. .----. ...- . .-.-.- heh. so i'm thinking of doing a brief unit next week in my american literature course on modern songwriters. obviously, especially over the past century, songwriters have played a huge role. in a sense, they've become the new poets. odd to say that since we still have poets and very good ones at that. but songwriters are the closest thing to a common voice in poetry these days. poets don't achieve the wide cultural status they once did through people like the fireside poets (holmes, longfellow, etc.). so we are left with songwriters. and there are plenty of shit songwriters the way their were/are shit poets. but that's half the fun of it, isn't it? i was thinking of using dylan, public enemy, maybe springsteen. i'd love some recommendations for important, cultural songwriters from the united states in the last 50 or 60 years. leave 'em in the comments if you would. posted by J.
