np: grateful dead - workingman's dead
every now and then i feel like it really pays off to do the things i do. as i was filling in for eugene's show tonight, i took up the entire 9 o'clock hour to do a tribute to ray charles. i played his amazing 1962 album modern sounds in country and western music in its entirety. as i was in the midsts of playing the first song, the phone rang and the guy on the other end informed me that his wife loved ray charles. she had seen him perform when she was very young and this album in particular was her favorite. they were just going to sit back and listen. that made me very happy.
there is unity and soul in music that amazes me no matter how long i swear to understand it up and down and back again. why else would i be listening to the grateful dead right now after more or less writing them off for years? well. i did go to guilford...
