Wednesday, June 09, 2004 np: lou reed - the blue mask so i have some plans for some really swank changes to the work going on over at j's indie/rock mayhem. i'll let you know as they develop. - eric muller, unc law professor and distinguished author, has some really dead on and sharp points about the department of justice's horrifying attempt to somehow justify the torture orders at abu gharib. it's really getting out of hand. make sure you read the linked post and the several below it, especially the one with the quote from the washington post. the madness has to stop. i went to the democratic headquarters here in guilford county last night as part of the democrat meetup organization. now, as a matter of disclosure, i am not a registered democrat. i am registered 'unaffiliated.' generally this is because of my tendency to fall quite left of the democratic party platform. however, it also has to do with my hesitancies to let any party do the speaking for me. not a single party has ever addressed all of my views perfectly. even the greens, probably the party that falls most in line with my political thoughts, are not perfect in my mind. my intentions in going to this meeting were two fold: one, to see what kind of organization there was for the campaign of will jordan, the lawyer taking on howard coble in the u.s. house race in this district; two, with kerry's numbers rapidly growing here in n.c. (he's within four percent according to rassmussen's june poll), i thought it might be interesting to see what kind of ground work was being done to push him in the state. i've been to similar meetings before with the greens and while big on idealism, they are normally short on organization. the democratic party is better off by far, being obviously much better funded and organized from a national level than the purely grassroots greens here in north carolina. the ideas they came up with were good and traditional (canvassing, booths at festivals, etc.) but on the national level, it's not the kind of thing i'm looking for. at wqfs we've been working on non-partisan voter registration which works wonderfully given that the average QFS listener/concert attendee in the area are either registering democrat or unaffiliated. so it's almost like doing liberal get out the vote, just, you know, with the appearance of bi-partisanship. how wonderful. - keep your eyes peeled for the new segments/updates to j's indie/rock starting tonight with the play list from tonight's show. posted by J.
