Tuesday, August 24, 2004 np: drive-by truckers - the dirty south expect a review of this album shortly on the j's indie/rock blog, but so far it really might be the best, most diverse (yet cohesive) record the truckers have released. i'm really loving it thus far. there's a really wonderful review of my friend andrew's latest recording, time travel is possible. i've played cuts from it on my show a few times and it's quite an interesting listen. so check out the review. dick cheney seems to have mentioned something rather interesting in a speech today. you can read atrios and kos' different responses to it. more or less, cheney voiced his opposition to the federal marriage amendement but said he deferred to bush's opinion as the direction of the administration. the whole thing is kind of odd. obviously cheney has his personal reasons for not siding with the FMA (his daughter mary), but to voice his differences from the administration and then say he defers to them? strange. and the whole thing seems mildly self-serving..as if trying to seem more moderate, yet using his daughter for his political advantage, appealing to the conservative sect. i don't know what to make of it. i had a horrible nightmare last night. i dreamt it was election day and i had somehow forgotten that it was. i looked at the clock, realized it was 8 p.m. and the polls were closed. i was incredibly upset about this. i told my first period class about this, and they were perplexed why i was so upset about not voting. i'm in the midsts of reading all the pretty horses by cormac mccarthy. previously i'd read his masterful (and harrowing) blood meridian. this is a considerably different affair from that book, but i'm really enamoured of his style. he doesn't use commas at all, which is quite an interesting thing. he also doesn't use quotation marks. it's a very stark and spare grammatical style that yields some really amazing mood. his work is certainly not for everyone, but the images and feeling that it evokes is really unique and, in turns, unsettling and beautiful. posted by J.
