Wednesday, October 20, 2004 np: ac/dc - highway to hell an appropriate soundtrack having just finished my unit on the divine comedy in all my classes. so, a good handful of students at my school are convinced i'm gay. they make snide, transparently un-clever comments in class and (in some cases) to people out in the halls. my favorite remark was overheard by another teacher who relayed this conversation: Student 1: "(unheard garble)..he [Yours Truly] has a girlfriend." Student 2: "Well I call him a faggot!" (repeated several times) so i sat down and thought about what stereotypical (and therefore, patently unreliable) things about me could they have interpreted as being evidence of my homosexuality. here's a short list: 1) i come down hard on anyone who uses the word 'faggot' in class, just as i would any other sort of derogatory epithet. i also frown upon the phrase "that's gay," referring to any number of things in a negative manner. 2) i come down hard on any hateful comments about gays and lesbians in my classroom the same as i would hateful comments about someone's sex, race, nationality, etc. 3) being somewhat of a performance artist at times in the class, i use wild hand gestures and movements. this is all i could really come up with. there's also the rather proper way i speak in the classroom, what with being an english teacher and all. that's when i realized that if these students ever actually had a gay teacher, i mean, someone who actually, really, truly was homosexual... they wouldn't know what to do. they'd be so lost that someone dare be so brazenly comfortable and open about their being that it would befuddle them. so instead, they settle on simply lobbing accusations at others. calling me 'homo' under their breath in class or something similar to the exchange i mentioned earlier. and the long, slow march of progress in our society, certainly not helped by presidential debate questions like "do you believe homosexuality is a chioce," continues. damn breeders. posted by J.
