np: the arcade fire - funeral
so while i've been sitting over at the j's indie/rock blog debating whether the drive-by truckers or the streets have recorded this year's best album, truer indie-rock wingnuts have been orgasming over the arcade fire's debut album. i guess something had to replace the utter boredom that turn on the bright lights redux (aka antics) induced in those who saw interpol as some sort of messiah.
i'm already sounding shrill. it's not that i don't like interpol (their debut is a lovely piece of post-punk revisionism and their newest record isn't bad either; it's just predictable), i'm just getting those jittery feelings again like i did when i returned from england to find the strokes all up in my face.
getting back to my original point, don't count me in the kool-aid drinking masses yet, but funeral is quite a listen. it sounds to me like what the elephant 6 collective should have ended up sounding like instead of dissipating amidst numerous bands and the disappearance of neutral milk hotel after their best work. but i really, at this point, don't find it a better record than the dirty south, a grand don't come for free or power (q and not u's latest). we'll see.

ed cone has an interesting link and comment on the media general group's suppression of opinion in the editorial pages of the newspapers they own. seems the winston-salem journal here in north carolina totally thrashed george w. in their paper, but stopped short of actually endorsing kerry. it's an interesting read and a really intriguing inspection of opinion in your quote-unquote "local" paper.
i may not be posting again this weekend due to my ongoing computer problems, so talk at you monday if not. in the meanwhile, go cardinals!
