Thursday, October 21, 2004 np: various artists - por vida: a tribute to the songs of alejandro escovedo my first foray into that ever-so-shiftily-titled music genre of alt-country was son volt's debut album trace. i was a pure son volt fan, in that i had no clue who uncle tupelo was or who jay farrar might have worked with in the past. jeff tweedy? who? wilco? yeah, i think i heard "box full of letters" on beavis and butt-head once. well, numerous music purchases and countless country-deviations later, i'm returning to my initial excitement. son volt went on so-called "hiatus" after the release of their third LP wide swing tremolo, but with jay farrar's subsequent two solo LPs, EP and live album, the chances of that "hiatus" ever ending seemed less and less likely. flash forward to the tribute record that i'm listening to right now. son volt re-formed to record a version of escovedo's "sometimes" and do a beautiful version. and according to pitchfork media, apparently it went so well that they're now back in the studio working on recording their 4th LP and planning a tour for early 2005. praise god. the other band that i still love endlessly that affected me so much in my teen years that reunited recently was toad the wet sprocket. they did a great reunion tour in 2003. unfortunately, that didn't manifest into anything else. they're now back to working separately. -- sara, as for jon stewart, i've yet to see the actual crossfire appearance, but i've been privy to the transcripts. i think he gave everyone on that show the good ass kicking that they deserved. enough said. also, in order to further prove my heterosexuality (see the previous post), i would like to make the following statements: man, i hate the yankees and wow, what a game. go, red sox. also, the cardinals have been my favorite baseball team since i first remember. i haven't seen them in a world series since 1987 and their 7 game loss to the twins. this would be a sweet return. so they don't have the wizard of oz anymore (my favorite baseball player of all time), but they're still my team. if they make it to the series, i'll have to abandon my support of the red sox. sorry, guys. loyalty is an issue. but hey, at least it'd be great to see such a communist world series. no matter how you bet, red wins! hah! posted by J.
