Monday, October 25, 2004 np: wilco - live at raleigh memorial auditorium big ol' thanks to david butler for making me a copy of the wilco show that i attended back in september. so the barbecue festival was saturday. and katie, if you're reading this, happy birthday. i just plain forgot when i (surprisingly, or maybe, not so surprisingly) saw you at the democratic headquarters. aside from wandering around lanier hardware for close to an hour (which isn't nearly enough time - that place is a maze and oh, so fun to wander through), i put away some lexington style pork and watched pig races and generally had a wonderful time as i always do. we watched a strong man competition, ate our innaugural sandwich with mad dog in his westphalia van, ate fried green tomatoes and drove home listening to miles davis' sketches of spain. a lovely day. oh. and i met patrick ballantine. a bit of a surprise that after having attended two barbecue festivals during election years, a major politician finally shows up in person to an event that regularly draws in close to 100,000 people. what's the deal? why do i not see more political faces? ballantine is running for governor against the incumbant mike easley. i spoke with him very briefly, saying that i enjoyed hearing his ideas on the debates (true) and was glad to see them try to keep the level of snark down (a bald-faced lie - he and easley's debates were among the snarkiest i've ever seen). since i was wearing a will jordan for congress bumper sticker on my flannel shirt, ballantine asked me if i was a registered democrat. i answered that i was unaffiliated (also true - i hate party affiliation) and voted for people, not parties. of course, after all this i wasn't sure he was really interested. i think he could tell in my rather general comments that i have no intention of voting for him. however, on the drive home i began to kick myself. hard. i didn't play my one trump card. "yes, senator ballantine, i'm a public school teacher." i really have to start bringing that up more often. -- so the cardinals are down two games, but that's okay. they're undefeated in busch stadium in the playoffs this year, so heading back to st. louis on tuesday is definitely a plus. however i'm biting my nails worrying that i'm going to see a repeat of '87. the AL team that year (the twins) had the homefield advantage also and each team won every home game, handing the twins the series in game 7. -- finally, j. ball (my apartment mate) bought the arrested development first season DVD. first off, if you've never sat down to watch this show, it is easily the funniest on network television by a landslide. second, the dvd just proves it further. upon rewatching the first season, the episodes hold up and get even funnier with repeated viewings. and god bless the people smart enough to hire david cross for his role. i think i'll go home and watch more tonight. with willow. a female. i'll leave the rest to your imagination. okay, to help your imagination, willow is j. ball's new himalayan cat. she's adorable. posted by J.
