Tuesday, November 23, 2004 np: the velvet underground - the velvet underground i'm aeons late on falling in love with the velvet underground, but i've been that way with a handful of bands. i can't remember how long ago i bought the velvet underground and nico, but i remember driving to see ninoh when she worked at this coffee shop owned by some indian couple who didn't always like to pay her in afton village in concord. i was listening to "all tomorrow's parties" as i pulled in. or was it "venus in furs?" either way, that album was in the cd player. and i was falling hard even then. when i went to the state FBLA conference at the Koury center here in greensboro when i was in 10th grade, i walked into the blockbuster music there at four seasons mall. in addition to cassette copies of midnight oil's diesel and dust and the ramones' loco live, i was looking at a copy of the squirrel nut zippers' hot in a discount bin. when lo and behold, buried in this bin was a copy of the velvet underground and nico. i took it up to the counter, but it rang up as full price. when i protested, the worker merely shrugged and said someone must have moved it. it is quite possible that had i purchased that album that day, i would've gotten into them a lot sooner. but also, knowing my taste at the time, i don't know that that's an absolute. the god of music must have been looking out for me that day. so sunday, while purchasing one of matthew sweet's newest albums, kimi ga suki * raifu, i finally purchased both white light/white heat and the velvet underground. they are very different records (largely because of the firing/departure of john cale in the period between their recordings), but are each mesmerising and unreal. every velvet underground record i've heard is simultaneously one of the most unique and inspiring pieces of recorded music i've ever heard. even now, around 35 years after they were originally recorded. i just needed to gush a bit. -- two websites i've discovered (both thanks to ed cone): monkeys' typing shakespeare simulator and the north carolina barbecue blog. monkeys typing shakespeare is easily one of the most bizarre and time occupying things i've seen in some time. the amount of work that went into creating this site to try and solve this incredibly inane question is precisely the kind of thing i see myself being obsessed with, so therefore, i love it. my current record is 20 letters from coriolanus. although my favorite is my monkey that randomly typed the first 20 letters of "Gloucester: Now is the winter of our discontent.." Classic. the north carolina barbecue blog is, as it says, a blog devoted to reviewing barbecue restaurants here in the old north state. a doubtlessly invaluable tool if you are travelling around this lovely state of ours. it will be a new permanent fixture at the right. -- i'm going to be about for a bit during thanksgiving, but i may or may not be here on the blog. if it goes dark for a few days, that's where i am. enjoy your holiday meals and time with family. value every second of every bite and every family member. (but not every bite of every family member) there are plenty of people spending thanksgiving without one or the other or both. the fact that i am blessed with both makes me incredibly thankful. and to my friends who are abroad (erika in iraq) and abroad at home (brynn, sara, bryan, ali, james, james, jared and anyone else i've gone too long without seeing), best of thanksgiving wishes to you. i love you all.
