Monday, December 13, 2004 np: the delays - faded seaside glamour i was thinking that perhaps something from this album was my devil's sonata from last week. alas, no, but rather, i've found one of the best pop albums of 2004. the delays feel like the current heir to the multi-seated throne at times occupied (in my mind) by the byrds, big star, the church, the la's, teenage fanclub, matthew sweet, semisonic and others. "hey girl" is one of the most perfect pop songs ever written. if you ever had any immense joy in your heart for "there she goes" by the la's, go listen to this band. on saturday night, a new era dawned. i'm not quite sure who i was thinking was there before. maybe it had just been empty. three years ago, i was with time magazine in thinking sleater-kinney was the answer to the question of who the best rock and roll band in america was. now, the answer is clearer than clear. the drive-by truckers. perhaps it's that i've seen them 5 times now in the last year and a half. perhaps it's that i've never had a southern band to truly call my own. the drive-by truckers are three of the strongest songwriters i've laid ears on in some time. they each speak to the history, the intelligence, the resiliance of the South. they don't pull any punches when it comes to acknowledging the serious flaws of the South over the last 200+ years. but they speak to a section of the population that refuses to be pigeonholed because of the local geography. to a group of people who love country and big, catchy rock and roll, but don't find david allen coe to be a soothing co-conspriator. the drive-by truckers could be your new favorite band. any of their three most recent releases, 2004's the dirty south, 2003's decoration day or 2001's southern rock opera are good places to start. why not buy one through amazon and help out the triad health project while you're at it? i apologize for the lack of talk recently. the weekend was a lovely one spent away from the computer and the last weeks have been trying ones with helping kids on our soon-to-be-due poetry research projects. now that i'm done gushing about the truckers, where do they end up on the j's indie/rock top 25 albums of 2004? you'll just have to see.. posted by J.
