Thursday, December 02, 2004 np: the wind in the trees outside my classroom window. i've already had some people order through amazon to help out the triad health project. make sure you spread the word! all it takes is one extra click when you're buying items through amazon to make a difference this holiday. michael had an interesting suggestion that makes sense, depending on how you feel. he suggested that instead of buying the entire j's indie/rock mayhem top 25 albums of 2004 through amazon, that you buy them through a local, independent record store, then donate money separately to the THP. his suggestion (and comment) was insightful and surprising. mostly surprising because michael lives in brooklyn and said that he hasn't found any record stores up there that match our own gate city noise right here. i'll have to pass that little nugget on to andrew and the hard workin' folks down there at my favorite record shop here in greensboro. but michael is correct. independent record stores fight an uphill battle every day of the year to bring you better, more diverse and harder to find selections of music than your average big box store. treat them as well as they treat you. hey, after all, gate city noise's 2nd annual 24 hour sale is coming up next week on december 7th. i'll post about that later. bottom line - just give this holiday season. where your money goes matters less than the fact you choose to make a difference at all. but i'll love you forever for donating to the THP. promise. -- so he's not allowing photography or signing of anything but his newest novel, and no personal signatures. but all the same i'm fired up as all to go see tom wolfe tonight at the books-a-million at concord mills mall back in my hometown. i was hoping to get my copy of bonfire of the vanities signed, but just getting to meet the man is a treat. this will make four autographed books of note that i own. the other three are: a first edition of steve earle's collection of short stories, doghouse roses; a first edition of doug marlette's novel the crossing; a hardback of ray bradbury's the martian chronicles. every one of them means the world to me for various reasons. i don't own them for the value, indeed only one or two of them might actually be worth anything. i own them for the powerful words that flowed from those hands and into the copy i have. here's hoping it all rubs off just a little. posted by J.
