Monday, January 31, 2005  Rachel and me. i don't often mention a lot of intensely personal things on my blog for one reason or another. a large one is, well, boring readers. yes, this is my blog. yes, this is my journal. yes, i talk about the most inane topics on a regular basis. however, i try to keep it at least confined to things that other people could potentially have an interest in. as such, this post is purely selfish. this picture is a bit old now (as anyone who has seen my grown out hair lately can attest), but it serves its purpose. that's me and rachel, my girlfriend. i forget, honestly, what we were doing that evening that we'd gotten a bit spruced up. i think, actually, we were going to the new teacher gala at the empire room downtown. i am a very lucky person in the sense that rachel is an amazing partner in crime at many, many things. we sit in fountains. we juggle plastic vegetables in up-scale cookware stores. we laugh an awful lot. we went dancing once. the bottom line being, she is wonderful. and i just thought i'd share. -- snow delays are all nice and everything but not if you have first period planning, as i do. it cuts my planning period down to less than 30 minutes. and i still have 2 and a 1/2 full classes to teach. alas. -- everyone who gets a chance should go see the current art exhibit in the main gallery at guilford college's hege library. it's is a 24 piece exhibit with each painting representing one book of the iliad. even more remarkable is the fact that every word of each book is written into the painting. all 15,000+ words of the epic are spaced out over these 24 paintings, and for people who are intense lovers of this work (which includes me), this exhibit is nothing short of a dynamic revelation. i'm taking one of my classes there on a field trip. i hope they find it as amazing as i do. the iliad exhibit is at hege library until feburary 27th. go to it. posted by J.
