Tuesday, February 08, 2005 np: pulp - his 'n' hers this early 90s kick will not leave my cd player. maybe things really do deserve some fierce re-evaluation around the 10 year mark. my friend eban even sent me some recent demos of his that, sound wise, remind me of exile in guyville era liz phair. circular society. -- this could just be because i'm an english teacher, but i'll be damned if innapropriate use of quotation marks doesn't irritate me. lately i've been fascinated by people's tendency to put quotes around words they consider slang or informal language. like a memo i receive at school where someone says: "i know the students think they're being 'cool'.." as if someone, so far removed from our society, would mistake that the person meant thermally cool as opposed to hip cool? really, now. but this morning brought the insanity to new levels. i was behind a mac papers delivery truck. mac paper is a paper supply store that has all sorts of paper things. i don't know how they stock up against the ifinitely-better-named "if it's paper" (which always makes me think of spatula city from UHF), but they are a paper store to be dealt with apparently. the mac papers truck's logo read as follows: We're "Glad You Called!" huh? are they implying sarcasm? i can see someone saying this while making air quotes, emphasis on the "glad you called" part and totally sounding insincere. it just really confused me, but simultaneously made my morning. -- i don't quite know what to say anymore about the looming budget debacle. bush is claiming that he's slashing programs that don't get results or are duplicates. so, if he's cutting unsuccessful programs, how does he explain this? If the budget is approved, abstinence education would get $206 million, an increase of $39 million. oh, right. that makes sense. consistantly non-performing programs that tend to lead to more abortions and more STDs. there is a comparable grey area where we can teach kids how to choose abstinence but also to protect themselves. no one is pro-abortion and people are slow to realize it. i need a glass of sweet tea and a long sleep. posted by J.
