np: soft breezes.

so i mentioned that mono is no fun. being hospitalized for complications with mono is even less exciting.

after having spent all but one day out of work last week with a throat nearly swollen completely shut and the inability to communicate very well with most of my compatriots, i finally went back to the doctor on friday. i was thinking, okay, surely they can decide that something else is going on here other than mono and can help me out.

well, the doctor became rather concerned rather quickly. they started me on oxygen and an IV for fluids which were both nice. the oxygen made breathing easy for the first time in days and it really felt better to actually breathe in some air. the IV was good also since i'd been trying to drink as much liquid as i could the previous days, but swallowing, period, was hard and not very fun.

so off i went to the moses cone ER (via ambulance - this time i was conscious for the ride!) and was admitted to the hospital that evening. all told i was in the hospital from about 11:00am on friday morning until noon time on sunday. they took very good care of me and i'm hoping that i get one of those billboards around town soon.

turns out i had some sort of bacterial infection on top of my mono, possibly left over from a bout with strep throat in february. so the swelling was way over what it should have been. i had a sinus infection also which was cutting off breathing in general. last night i only woke up three times in the course of my 9 hours of sleep and that's the least i've had to wake up during the night in about a week. and none of them were because i couldn't breathe. i'm still out of work today, but am going to attempt to return tomorrow as long as i feel up to it strength wise. i have to, really, as school kinda puts a deadline on your work. there are only four weeks left of school. i'm beaming like a school kid.

i was walking into my humble abode last night when i looked up through our upstairs neighbors' sliding glass patio door. the way my apartment is set up, i live on the first floor, but have to walk down to get to it, so i often find myself looking into their living room fireplace. there used to be this painting hanging above it that j. ball was convinced was a rothko. however, that is no longer there. what has taken its place?

a ball and chain.

i found out second-hand last year sometime that the couple above us who had previously not been married were now, indeed, married, which makes the appearance of the ball and chain even more hilarious. do they use it is a prop gag? when people come over do they introduce them to 'the old ball and chain' and then chuckle lightly at one another? do they often make jokes to their friends about needing to go home to the 'old ball and chain?' are they going to procure a large battle-axe to mount in the living room as well?

finally, how frightened would i be if i went up to visit and found ample evidence (clipped comics on the fridge, book collections, framed comics, handbags, etc.) of their love and frequent enjoyment of either the lockhornes or the born loser?

p.s. do any newspapers around the piedmont even carry the born loser? the last time i saw it, and granted this was years ago, was in my hometown paper, the independent-tribune. any input?

My goodness--- well, I hope you are recovered now. I would have sent you strange herbal remedy concoctions had I known before, but I don't read many blogs that often lately... Mono + infections sounds generally very unpleasant.

I like the ball and chain idea—a conversation piece, for sure, whether it is true or not for the dynamics of their relationship.
