Thursday, June 09, 2005 np: sounds of a kyoto hotel lobby. i'm going to attempt to post these bloggings as a series of journal entries rather than specific dialogues about my journey. although that may change, but you'll get the jist of it rather quickly i suppose. needless to say i have arrived in kyoto safely and will be starting my day to day adventures tomorrow. i will try to post as often as i can (daily if possible) but know that my adventures may get in the way. Chicago - O'Hare Airport - 2:10 p.m. CST - 8th June: after a rather uneventful flight from PTI to O'Hare, a snag - a three-hour delay to our flight to Osaka. the day gets longer - we'll reckon to get into Osaka at about 4 or 5 a.m. EST (6 or 7 p.m. their time). we also had 7 p.m. their time). we also had a rather unfortunate gate change. small change, really other than watching a (presumably) japanese man practice his baseball swing for some minutes in front of me, it's been a laid-back and uneventful travel experience. O'Hare is about as i remember it: crowded, loud, bustling, robust. it has that fun sub-way that takes you on a moving sidewalk through a close approximation of a low-grade local planetarium showing of Laser Floyd. shine on you crazy terminal. - United Airlines Flight - 11:00 p.m. EST - 8th June our flight was quite late taking off, further delayed while we taxied and taking off, further delayed while we taxied and so forth. we're getting close to halfway. there is about 7 1/2 hours remaining. we're currently over alaska and the view is majestic. glaciers and mountains for miles and miles. there is such a sense of beauty to it all. earlier this year, NPR was giving away an Alaskan cruise in a drawing when you donated money to them. i told rachel i'd take her on the cruise with me if i won, and now here i am over that very land, but sadly, not with her. - Hokke Club Hotel, Kyoto - 12:49 a.m. Japan Time - 10th June after several delays we finally made it to our hotel. adam, cynthia and i ventured out to a small restaurant neerby and after consumming several Kirins and a handful of great food (japanese mushrooms in bacon, edmame, mushrooms with ginger, etc.) we headed back to the hotel where i came here to type. this was the first restaurant we went to where i was asked to remove my shoes and sit cross legged at a low table much in the traditional style. it was very relaxing, very fun and really enjoyable after such a hard day flying here. tomorrow we set off to see one of kyoto's many rock gardens and i'm very excited for that. after seeing a bit of anime over the years, you think i'd understand japan's affinity for small, cute creatures, but the obviousness of it overwhelms me. there are cute things everywhere. even the bus transit has a cute, anthropomorphic bus which is its mascot. fascinating. until later. posted by J.
