Thursday, August 11, 2005 np: frankie goes to hollywood - "two tribes" alright. i'll admit it. sometimes i like to go slumming. the thrill of being amongst people so unlike me. of feeling like i'm in danger at all times. waiting for one of them to go nuts 'cos i'm there. most of the time though, i avoid michelle malkin's website. but today i was linked there while reading about one of her comments regarding the cindy sheehan debacle and stumbled across an ad for a conservative t-shirt company. so i went to peruse their merchandise. and i find this.  in case you can't read the fine print, it has the initials of the aclu with an islamic crescent moon and star replacing the 'c.' it reads "anti-christian lawyers union: jihad with a law degree." now i know the far-right doesn't have much to love about the american civil liberties union. even if they did sign on to protect rush limbaugh's privacy rights when he tried to prevent his medical records from being released and showing his prescription drug abuses. i also know that t-shirts really don't matter that much. but they can be indicative of the kind of mindset infesting the extremes of a world view. the aclu's attempts to keep a separation of church and state (which in this country, obviously, comes most often in conflict with christian denominations) has run them afowl of the right time and time again. but this t-shirt asserts that being anti-christian is somehow linked with being...muslim? for two religions linked by thousands of years of shared history, patriarchs/matriarchs and even gods, they sure are used to represent the complete opposite of one another whenever it's convenient to do so. in this case, the manufacturer decided that representing the islamic faith as a faith-oppressing, legal-manipulating, warring group of anti-americans (and the aclu as a group of islamic, faith-oppressing, legal-manipulating, warring lawyers) was most convenient. again, it's a t-shirt. there are plenty of t-shirts out there that say hateful, mind-numbing, absurdist things from any side of the aisle. but i would hope that the vast number of conservatives buying materials off that site would have the common sense to ignore that particular shirt for the ridiculous, false tripe that it is. posted by J.
