Tuesday, August 23, 2005 np: the new pornographers - twin cinema just a couple of days until school starts back. ah, the new year. so many possibilities and bright hopes. i'm feeling a lot more confident this year than i did last. that's a good thing to be feeling, certainly. we're a host of new teachers. turnover is a consistant problem in this industry. thanks to the departure of one member of my department, i'm now in charge of the senior project at our school. it's actually a pretty challenging project that seniors undertake through their english classes. it involves a research paper, creation of a product, tri-fold board presentation and an oral presentation given to a panel of judges from the community. it makes up 25% of their overall course grade. and it takes a lot of work on everyone's part. intense. two special dates have passed recently with nary a mention on this blog. and i feel pitiful over it. first, sometime back in july, the 4th birthday of this blog happened. blogs have certainly come into vogue enough to be ridiculed by people. i'm still a giant advocate of their potential as citizen journalism and so forth. and having been at this (although in varied forms) for over 4 years, i feel very happy to be a part of it. even if this is largely just personal ramblings. the other date that passed by was my birthday on august 21st. i'm living during the third occurance of my birth year according to the chinese zodiac. so those of you with an abacus in your head know i just turned 24. so, i still get a lot of questions about my age from parents. one rather saucy lady commented on it in an almost flirtatious manner. -- the lefty blogging community has stumbled upon a great language framing device by taking the phrase 'radical cleric,' so often applied to people like muqtada al-sadr, and levelling it at fundamentalist political figures like pat robertson. 'radical cleric robertson' has a nice ring to it. especially since it's incredibly true. and especially when you advocate for the assasination of fairly elected leaders of other countries. this little bit of news has been getting the rounds on the 'net the last couple of days, but really. it can't be mentioned enough. it's an incredibly hypocritical statement by a man who has done nothing but sully the beautiful religion he claims to tout. who would jesus assasinate, pat? apparently you're in the driver's seat for that information. posted by J.
