a good many of you who read this were at one time residents of NC-08, the House district lorded over by robin hayes. i've been down on hayes ever since he sent me an email reply lamely trying to justify his vote for the CARP legislation that has kept many a college/community radio station (like WQFS) from being able to webcast due to the ridiculous prices charged by ASCAP, BMI and other licensing firms.
the NC-08 hasn't been so hot on hayes recently either. especially after his blatant flip-flop on voting for CAFTA (first he said he wouldn't, then with no warning at the last minute, he did). in a region that has experienced the shutdown of one of its largest manufacturers in recent years, pillowtex, this was not a smart move.
now we have him questioning our local officials? yikes. from the (print-only) montgomery herald (emphasis mine):
During the fall trip to Washington by Chamber of Commerce representatives, the group had an opportunity to visit with congressmen from across the region. Issues from education, to textiles to the economy were discussed. When it was all said and done, the one thing that was very clear is just how out of touch Washington is with rural America.
During one of the first sessions, the floor was opened for a question and answer period. Montgomery County School Superintendent Dr. Lindsey Suggs questioned the difficulty schools were encountering with the federal mandate, No Child Left Behind...
Hayes, in a heated exchange with Suggs, defended the legislation and reminded Suggs, "You need me more than I need you."
so while i know a lot of you (including myself) don't live in the NC-08 anymore, we can still take action. one, if your parents or friends still live there (like mine do), encourage them to vote for larry kissell, the democrat running against hayes' completely out-of-touch ways. he seems to be the sharpest opponent of hayes i've seen in some time.
second, contribute to kissell's campaign. doesn't matter how small a donation, just donate. $10 is a great gift since it's money he didn't have. with the donation quarter closing at the end of this month, every candidate needs as much support as possible to look good when the numbers are reported.
i don't want to set foot back in my home county for two more years of robin hayes' assinine leadership. toss. the bum. out.
