Wednesday, June 07, 2006 Senators Burr and Dole: I am appalled and disappointed in the Republican-run Senate's decision to waste the American people's time with debating the Federal Marriage Amendment, the most insulting and disspiriting piece of legislation I've seen in some time. Not only do I believe that there are numerous more substantial issues that the Senate should be tackling, but so do the rest of the American people. In poll after poll, 'moral'/FMA-type issues rank in the very bottom of people's concerns. Where are the discussions on health care? The war in Iraq? Gas prices? Finally, how dare 49 Senators, including yourself, presume that they can tell private churches who they can and can not marry. Marriage is a religious institution and it should remain so. Churches have the right to decide for themselves whether or not they want to marry gay couples. The only responsibility you have is to give equal rights to ALL CITIZENS. This ought to include the legal right for gay couples to pursue the same legal partnerships and benefits that are available to straight couples. Let the churches decide who they want to marry. Give citizens equal access to rights and priviliges and get back to doing something productive with the people's time. Respectfully, Josh Neas social conservatives would love to be able to tell more liberal churches how to deal with marriage. for all their bluster about 'religious freedom,' they'd shut down a gay-marrying church in a heartbeat. their concern isn't about the family, otherwise they'd welcome gay people who want to join in the tradition of a solid family rooted in marriage. their concern isn't about rights, since they refuse to acknowledge all citizens' rights to legal partnerships and the benefits that go along with them. and their concern isn't about religion since they'd, effectively, be telling some churches that their belief in gay marriage is illegal and therefore has to stop. as i said in this letter to the senators, let churches decide who they want to marry. that's their right as private organizations. give citizens equal access to marriage/partnership rights and then stop wasting our time with this ridiculous crap. posted by J.
