Wednesday, July 19, 2006 Senator Dole: I was disappointed to see you voted against H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005. I wish I could speak with you personally about why you chose to vote against it, but I am left instead to simply hypothesize your possible reasons. There are many bits of mis-information that exist about stem cell research. The biggest and most outrageous of these falsehoods is that "life" is created and destroyed exclusively for this research. That is not true. Stem cells are harvested through fertilized eggs, or embryos, that are created for use at fertility clinics for a process known as in-vitro fertilization, or IVF. IVF is a common and widely used process for helping couples who have trouble conceiving children on their own. This process regularly creates numerous embryos for this process, but ultimately only one is used and ultimately implanted in the uterus for gestation. These left over embryos could go from being simply tossed out to being the foundation of bold new directions in medicine that could change countless lives of people who currently suffer from all sorts of diseases. Scientists are only beginning to discover the potential benefits that research into this field could yield us, but the standing policy of the Bush administration has put a stranglehold on this groundbreaking work. All of this despite the American peoples' broad support for this issue; nearly 2 to 1 according to an ABC poll which you can view here. I would hope that you would re-consider your vote if President Bush vetoes this bill and sends it back to Congress for a second vote. North Carolinians with disabilities and disabling diseases, their families and friends, are counting on you to help them in their hour of need. I know you will come through for them. Though I often disagree with your opinions and votes, this is an issue on which we obviously agree. It is an issue that Americans agree with you on by a nearly 2 to 1 margin according to an ABC poll which you can view here. Issues like this do not stradle party lines and it's good to see you can recognize bills that are for the betterment of all Americans in the present and future. Do me and the rest of North Carolina a favor and talk with Senator Dole about changing her vote should President Bush choose to veto this bill and send it back to Congress.
