Sunday, August 13, 2006 when i was in japan last year, i had a delicious candy bar called 'Crunky.' admittedly, i purchased it for the sheer humor involved in a candy bar which is named similarly to hip-hop slang. nevertheless, i selected a 'Crunky' mango chocolate bar and was wowed. it was light, full of mango flavor and really delicious. i still have the box and you can ask to see it sometime. flashforward to a few weeks ago. my friend kelly, former WQFS dj and JET program english teacher in northern japan, was preparing to return to the u.s. after her 3 years in nihon. taking advantage of myspace, i sent her a message asking if she could be the swellest person ever and bring me a few mango chocolate bars when she came home. she wrote back to tell me that, apparently, mango was last year's flavor. (i never did have my finger on the pulse of my generation.) and it seemed that melon flavors were the rage this year. really just desperate for some amusing japanese food products, i told her that was fine. needless to say, she didn't disappoint.  the chocolate is melon flavored; specifically, canteloupe. here are a few questions: 1) well, number one isn't so much a question as an imperative statement: look at the anthropomorphic melon! lookit! 2) why the angry eyebrows? perhaps he is angry for being eaten. an understandable fact. but he seems more demanding than anything. 3) if he is demanding something, what is it? fealty to the company that manufactured the chocolate? he does seem to be pointing to some sort of logo. the manufacturer's? the official logo of canteloupe? mark of the beast? it's a little unclear. 4) is he pointing? it's possible that he's saluting us - for buying a chocolate of such reputable quality, naturally. and for making his canteloupe life not go for nothing. 5) again, a statement: he's shouting. definitely shouting. i picture him sounding something akin to mr. sparkle on that ever-so-funny episode of the simpsons, but then again, a lot of japanese characters sound like that in my head. the chocolate, by the way, is really good. if you're ever in hokkaido, i'd highly recommend picking some up. especially if you like melon flavored things. they even smell like it. it's wonderful. needless to say, kelly is currently my hero. her and generalissimo melon. that's the guy on the box. ... is it evident yet that going back to work would probably be healthy for me? posted by J.
