np: toad the wet sprocket - welcome home: live at the arlington theatre, santa barbara 1992
there are several times that i have discussed what toad the wet sprocket has meant to me. they were my first "favorite band." you know, that band that matters above all others. and this recently released live show is a wonderful document of what they were.
but of special importance is track 15, a live version of "know me," originally from their debut album bread and circus. my disparate (or not so disparate) strands of music tie together. as the rousing ending of the song comes about, over top of the chiming, surging early-90s guitars comes glen phillips, singing with the most passionate intensity:
over top of one of the (at the time) true, rising stars of alternative/college rock in america, come the lyrics of one of its greatest practitioners: the replacements.
and so everything comes full circle.

we had a bomb threat at school today. if it were possible to have picked a less convenient time, i'd like to see it. two major grade-level tests going on, barely 40 degrees outside (and my coat in my car). we stood outside for about 35 minutes. as is the case with most threats like this, they were empty. but of course, we cannot do anything less than take the full precaution.
interestingly enough, they caught the person responsible by the time 3rd period was over.

and to harry reid and the other senate democrats (all 44 of them) who have all made it very clear they will vote no on president bush's private account scheme for social security...
bravo. glad to see you as a real, united party. now. go get 'em.
